5Finally--Practical stepsMay 25, 2009
By toneylee
This is what I like about the steps:
1. They don't stick out too far into the middle of the room.
2. They are acceptable as furniture (yes, plastic but not cheap-junk-looking) with a neutral color (well... ideally, I'd like color choices).
3. Even I could put them together, although I had to examine the picture very closely.

This is what my toy poodle likes about them:
1. Even when she hits them at a run (which she does) they don't skitter across the floor. As a matter of fact, the steps have not moved at all since I placed them.
2. The steps have backs, so you don't see scary empty space when you are learning to use them.
3. The steps have some depth and are surprisingly broad so you don't have to tiptoe up and down. They are slightly tilted backward for a feeling of security.
4. The carpet treads give your paws good purchase and that mean no scary slipping on the steps.

I did have to take time to teach my very timid dog how to use them. First going up, by placing her back feet on the bottom step and her front paws on the top. Then I could just put her front feet on the bottom step and let her scramble up. Down was the same--shaping behavior while giving reassurance by keeping my hands gently around her. It only took 3 or 4 days and then she could go up and down with confidence and pride. Even that, I think, happened only because I'd had cheaper steps in the past that had frightened her because they moved and wobbled so easily. These steps look and feel safe to a dog. I'd recommend them to anyone with a small dog who needs some independence getting on and off bed or couch.

One warning: This size is not tall enough for most beds (although just right for a couch). I chose this size for the compactness and because I could place the steps against one end of the chest at the foot of my bed. The dog climbs to the blanket chest and then to the bed (kind of like one more step). It's perfect for my needs, but I did measure first to be sure.

5Great option for older petsMay 14, 2010
By SusieL "SusieL"
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3JG04WOT2T3L1 We had a ramp a few years ago, for another dog. Neither dog (the older one or the younger one) liked it & would never use it. The two dogs we have now don't mind using them. The older one hasn't gotten to the point where she uses it on her own. But I've been training them both to use them & when they are told to "use the stairs", the will do that. ;-)

Easy to put together. Easy to move. We have teak furniture, so it kind of matches.

I'm pleased with this purchase.

3"Gentle Incline" means sloped stairs bad for dogsApr 07, 2011
By G. Harris
Anyone who has a dog knows, they should not jump down off of anything they cannot jump up on. Jumping down is far more dangerous, and most injuries occur to dog's legs, joints, and spine from jumping down. These stairs are fine for climbing up. The "gentle incline" does encourage dogs to climb up, but it DISCOURAGES a dog from using the stairs to climb back down...which is far more important. My dog has used stairs since she was a puppy. She is rough though, so when she plays she runs and hits the stairs with such force, she breaks the cheap ones, even though she only weighs 20 pounds. She will use these stairs to climb, but, after going down them a couple of times, she now jumps down next to them, or jumps over them, rather than using them to climb back down. She never did that with "regular" square stairs...I guess think about it...the designer of these stairs sure didn't....if you had to go down a flight of stairs where each step was sloped downward, would it be easy for you? You would certainly be able to climb up them, but going back down them would be uncomfortable to say the least.

Pros: Easy to assemble. Rounded soft edges. Carpeted to keep pet from slipping. Rubber feet to keep in place on wood or tile floors. Seem reasonably sturdy.

Cons: Each stair slopes downward, so even dogs trained to use stairs, will resist using them to climb down...which is far more important than using them for climbing up. Unit should be about 3 inches wider, no dog above 25 pounds in size would find the width comfortable.

4Great, Inexpensive SolutionMar 24, 2009
By D. Leschke
I only gave it 4 stars because our dog would not use the stairs.

They were very easy to assemble, lightweight and easier to maintain than the type that is entirely carpet.

After giving up on our dog using them, we gave them to a friend and their dog loves them. He uses them all of the time to get in and out of bed.

Our dog would rather struggle. She is very stubborn.

5Great for our 21 lb. Schnoodle!Dec 28, 2009
By Yolanda
Our 21 lb. Schnoodle just recovered from ACL surgery. She injured herself trying to jump UP onto our couch. These steps are great. It took only three days for her to get used to them. She had no trouble at all climbing up the two steps; however, it took her a couple more days to get used to using them to get off the couch. We also ordered the three (3) step Pet Gear for our bed. Again, she took a few days more to get up the courage using them to get off the bed than climbing up. She now uses them all the time. If your pet does not take to it immediately, do NOT get discouraged. Be patient and help your pet ~ we coaxed her with her favorite treat ~ cheese! PLEASE NOTE: There are two (2) different sized 2-step Pet Gears. Be sure to read the dimensions and choose the one that will work well with your couch. We chose the Easy Step I Pet Stairs instead of the Easy Step II (the Step II was too high for our couch). The Step I is slightly shorter than our couch, but works great! Also, they require minimal assembly. They are made of durable plastic and are more than sturdy enough for our 21 pounder. Highly recommend; sure beats a trip to the VET!
